zyprexa vs. abilify

Posted by cybercafe on August 3, 2003, at 2:58:06

how does abilify compare to zyprexa, does it let you "feel" more? does it let you feel excited about your life? does it get rid of impatience or boredom?

thanks

Cybercafe,

I think Zyprexa is a better medicine, but the Abilify will deffinatly make you feel more, in my case it was too much.

I know several people who were on Zyprexa, didn't like it primarily because of weight gain, but also because it made them tired/groggy so they were switched to Abilify and HATED it, said it made them feel "horrible" -- one person threw up constantly while on it.

I think (but could be wrong) that Abilify came out and was touted as being an alternative to other atypical psychotics because it had less side effects, but from what I've heard, this is not proving to be the case.

I switched from Zyprexa to Abilify because of the weight gain. I'll let you know how it goes.

You know its funny, when I was in canada I had an american prescription for Zyprexa, but couldn't get it because canada didn't have that yet? Now I'm in the states taking zyprexa ?and don't want the Abilify.

Sebastian

Who knows maybe it will be better for you? Or you can just wait till it goes up there? A by

I doubt it. Its a very hard tab and its very small but they cut very nicely if they haven't been siting out, then they become soft, you have to keep them dry. I've cut 15mg ones into four, so you shouldn't have any problem cutting a 30mg in four.

Sebastian

You should try, maybe you can order from the states, ask your doctor.

nope havnt seen my doctor yet.. hopefully sometime this week

i've been reading bad things about abilify and good things about zyprexa recently.... i'm wondering if you can avoid the bad effects of abilify by taking a small dose of each drug, what was your experience?

thanks again for sharing dude... your input really helps me :)

i take 20mg of zyprexa and 15mg of abilify...seems to be a good combination. the zyprexa really helps with the positive symptoms of my schizophrenia and the abilify seems to help a lot with my social interactions. as far as side effects are concerned, the abilify cancels out some of the sedation i felt when i was on the zyprexa alone. i don't sleep as much either. i've been losing weight, which is something that i wasn't able to do on the zyprexa alone.

When you take a small bit of each you get a small bit of each effect. I didn't find that eather one cancels anything from the other. In a sense this way is better, because neather one is as strong in your system. This was probably how I could tolerate the Abilify best and not lose as much sleep. I think one of my mistakes with Abilify was taking it in the evening, you might want to try the Abilify in the morning and Zyprexa in the evening. I warn you Abilify is still a strong medicine even in small quantities. I tried 3.75mg doses with my regular 10mg Zyprexa, that was the best I had tolerated it. I think I even enjoyed it for a short while, I gave up on it after a couple weekends of it only. As for all the bad stuff you read about Abilify, its probably true. And all the good stuff about Zyprexa. I guess the Abilify was fun to try in small doses, I wouldn't suggest a large dose, like more than a 7.5er, and I do think it works best with Zyprexa.

Why change if Zyprexa works well?

Just my 2 cents but I found adding Wellbutrin to the Zyprexa did all the things melinda was countering. It helped me better than Abilify for the social interactions and the weight gain.

Hi there, are you still on Abilify? Please tell me how it's going - I'm interested in whether or not you feel restless, impatient, and/or bored, and worst of all, NAUSEOUS. Thanks!

Hi,

I went from Zyprexa to Abilify for 6 months and am now back on Zyprexa. I found it hard to sleep at night on Abilify and had Seroquel and Restoril added to the Abilify to help me sleep. It seemed stupid to take three drugs: Abilify, Seroquel, and Restoril, when I could take one: Zyprexa, and sleep better with it, so I went back to Zyprexa

I have taken both Zyprexa and Abilify.

The bottom line is that Zyprexa is sedating and Abilify is activating. Your personality will determine which one you like best.

Abilify is working great for me. I am on 15mg, for about 3 weeks now. I have taken Zyprexa and Seroquel for long periods of time, and the Abilify is the best in my opinion. The worst side effects for me are boredom and restlessness. I manage my symptoms of the drug with other drugs. So all in all it hasn't been nearly as tough as others here have had. It’s so great having a normal appetite and less anxiety. I still have a long way to go with getting totally used to it though.
