Fainting on Nardil

Posted by Carlos on June 3, 2003, at 2:03:19

I've been on Nardil for over a month now and kept a steady dose of 60mg. It's working great for anxiety, and it's pretty good on depression as well.

My biggest problem is now that I can not stand up for more than about 25 seconds or else I start to get dizzy, my eyes get this unbearable pressure behind them, everything goes white, and I end up falling to the ground fainting.

One other question I've been up to 90mg for a week (before all this fainting) and noticed it increased agitation (got a little depressed and some anxiety was peeking in) is this normal when increasing dosage?

Anyways, I can't take this fainting. The only thing that helped was some kind of amphetamine, but once it wore off it gets worse so I stopped that.

I read a lot that your not suppose to get up quickly from a sitting or laying position. I would get up slowly as possible and hopefully this s/e with go away with time

I been at 90mg before, it increased anorgasmia and dizziness so I went back to 75mg. The anxiety/depression relief is pretty much the same for both dosages...for me

You probably had low blood pressure prior to starting Nardil. What you are describing is called postural hypotension, aka orthostatic hypotension. I had this the first few weeks , but it passed, as it does for most MAOI users...Talk to your doc if it persists because you shouldn't be fainting.

The right dose is KEY when it comes to MAOIs, I would experience a myriad of problems (although very minor) if I increased or decreased by 15mg (from MY optimal dose, 60mg)

I would suggest (and Im NOT a doctor) staying at the lower dose for a longer amount of time, wait until the orthostatic hypotension clears (which it does for most), and then re-evaluate the dose, or possibly the medication (Parnate has a lower incidence of hypotension)

At this point (only being on Nardil for a month) I wouldn't suggest adding any type of amphetamine or amphetamine-like drug or herb. Give it some time.

Thanks a lot guys for your suggestions. Right after I posted lastnight I started doing some research and found what was/is occuring sounds like orthostatic hypotension.

What's odd though is that it's just now starting after 5 weeks, 3 of those weeks being on 60mg. Since the fainting started happening, about 3 days (June 1) ago I immediately went down to 45mg and have been since.

I was aware that a side-effect would be maybe some dizziness when standing up quickly. So I've always made sure to get up slowing, sit for a few seconds, then stand up slow and steady. This passing out on the floor is ridiculous. I'm going to see a doctor tomorrow.

Hi Carlos -

I've never been on an MAOI, but I am struggling with a low blood pressure condition that can cause fainting. Have you had your blood pressure checked recently?

Does this occur only right after standing up? Or do you ever get up and are ok for a bit, and then faint?

I've read that MAOIs can cause high blood pressure - I don't know if the symptoms could actually be similar to low blood pressure.
