Tremor on SSRI/zoloft? Anything I can do?

Posted by fairnymph on February 11, 2003, at 14:05:19

After almost 3 weeks on zoloft (1st week 50 mg, since then 100mg/day), I'm having a constant mild yet noticeable (and annoying) tremor in my hands.

Is there anything I can do or take to help with the tremor? Should it subside over time, or am I stuck with it?

I found this to be a real problem with wellbutrin, especially when I combined it with Effexor.

Any suggestions most welcome!

What other meds are you taking? It can be VERY tough to figure out what med is causing which adverse effect. The only way I can find out is to stop taking the ones that are suspects and wait to see if the problem resolves (often not such a good idea). Are you taking WB with the Zoloft now?

There is one suggestion I can give here. High doses of Vitamin C. Combine this with a good quality Zinc suppliment and HIGH doses of Vitamin E. This should only cost you 30 dollars a month , and should help your body cope with the medications. Vitamin E is effective in Preventing Tardive Dyskenisia, so IT may work will for you. Good luck

I'm only taking zoloft.

You sound SSRI-sensitive. Zoloft caused a lot of restless legs and jaw clenching and some bruxism for me (worse than most SSRI's). You could possibly try adding a little (10-20mg/day) of a TCA such as nortriptyline (which has anticholinergic effects that might help), or adding some Neurontin (which possibly could help with bruxism or restless legs), OR adding some Buspar to negate some of the serotonergic effects of the Zoloft that could be contributing to those symptoms, OR adding a benzodiazepine (clonazepam, diazepam), OR try a little Serzone with it to see if that helps with the restlessness-motor aspect of it.

It's weird, too, since prozac didn't have any tremor or other motor effects for me (at 40 mg/day). Neither did Effexor.

Fortunutely, I don't seem to be suffering from anything other than the tremor...very mild jaw clenching but not worrisome and controllable with magnesium.

I took a lot of vitamin c and e at the suggestion of another poster and that DID seem to reduce the tremor significantly.

I'd like to try and avoid adding any strong meds to the zoloft, if possible. But, the serzone sounds interesting, because I've also heard that it can help with difficulty orgasming (which I have).

Is serzone sedating? I'm having some real issues with fatigue and lethargy, due to the winter time/weather, and i think also from starting on the zoloft. So, if serzone is sedating, I'll be fucked....I can barely get out of bed some days as it is...

Thanks again...

Is there anything that Zoloft is doing for you that Prozac or Effexor didn't do as effectively? If not, maybe you just need to switch back to one of those to eliminate the tremor?

Serzone too sedative? I thought it was. You might not like it. I would consider the Buspar add. I didn't find it sedative-just caused a little light-headedness, and then I got an increased alertness from it after awhile, but it transformed into a dysphoric hypomania later on-but I'm bipolar-you may not have that problem.

If you are having seasonal/bipolar/atypical depressive symptoms (with anxiety) MAOI's might be a good suggestion to your pdoc. I haven't tried any yet however.

Well, Effexor was never quite as effective as prozac for me, and stopped working after a few weeks at the max dose (:-/), unfortunately, since I did like it.

Prozac helped tremendously, and I didn't have any tremor like I said...only problem, was sexual stuff -- NO libido, totally unable to orgasm (though I was younger then, and had never come from penetration, so perhaps now it would not have this effect). I don't really want to go back on it though out of fear of the sexual stuff, and also I feel that prozac has too many long term effects on the brain.

Thus, I figured I'd give zoloft a try, as it's an SSRI, and supposedly has the least side effects of the SSRI, and is the other 'stimulating' SSRI. As I suffer from lethargic depression, the more sedating SSRIs are just out of the question.

The nice thing is that I can orgasm on zoloft! It's HARD, and doesn't happen all the time, but it's possible, and that makes a big difference to me. Unfortunately I still have no libido but I'm looking into some tribulus herb for that...

I have OCD and general anxiety, and lethargic depression (though my depression is somewhat situational, and I believe I will conquer it for good within a couple years).

Thanks for the help, I'll look into Buspar.
