hey DB25- hope you see this; didn't want to put to under the Tegretol thread because the topic was different.
I hate to sounds surly, but what your pdoc said is a bunch of hooey. It is true that some people with bipolar need a combo to get relief but you can't quantify it like that; that's totally generalizing and we know you can't do that in this business!
You listed the meds that you've tried...for the ones that didn't work, have they been in conjunction with other meds? How long have you been on the Tegretol? I don't know what your main symptoms are, but it can take a while. I can't really recommend what you should be on; one of the psychpharm experts on the board would be better qualified...but I'm on Lamictal- little to no side effects and starting to really get some relief. It can take a long time, though.

I'm the same and it's taken forever! Stupid "atypical reactions" to some and nothing with others...I mean really! And it's so hard to believe that something will work because you feel like you've tried EVERYthing. Add to that the fact that with so many of the mood stabilizers you need to wait so long (then you find out you need something else!) I'm sorry you're so frustrated and I know exactly how you feel. Right now the Lamictal seems to be helping, but I'm walking on eggshells because I don't know if it will last. I've gone through many that just haven't worked...
Hang in, it'll get better...
