clonidine and anger

Posted by SJJ on September 29, 2000, at 18:58:29

I have two kids on clonidine. One is also on luvox, the other on zoloft. They are increasingly angry, with outbursts lasting hours. Has anyone experienced anger or rage after being on clonidine?

James here....

Clonidine is used for anger, rage, and impulsivity
so it is probably something else.

I agree with James. But there are sometimes exceptions to the rule. These are called "parodoxical reactions". The drugs do the opposite things in some people. I doubt that this is the case.

I am suspicious that what you really have going on here might be AD/HD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) made worse by SSRI drugs like Zoloft and Luvox. I have not seen any literature associating SSRIs with a worsening of AD/HD. It is only speculation on my part based upon the interactions of different chemicals in the brain. I would screen your kids for AD/HD.

Another possibility is that both of your children have bipolar disorder. In this case, the antidepressants might have induced a manic-type state. Any family history of bipolar disorder? Symptoms of mania and hypomania often include increased activity, irritability, and rage.

In children, bipolar disorder and AD/HD look very similar and are often misdiagnosed as one or the other. To make matters more difficult, AD/HD and bipolar disorder often occur in the same child.

Good luck.

Ask your physician if it would be appropriate for your kids to try a different medication -- meds should help, not make matters worse.
