I went to war today
And fought
Wide-eyed, terrified, with strokes
Precisely parried, thrust,Mortal steel in self defense
With slight-
More heft than they who lie
Tonight dull-eyed in sand.
I went to war today
And held,
With Death one touch away,
His labored breath againstMy skin, my labored breath
On him
(Though once you look at Death,
In part, you die).
I went to war today,
The scars
Of hard-won Life could tell,
But theyre within; stillToday I went to war, and
Tomorrow
Off, again, I go,
Though none will ever cheer,
Or know.
This is the end of the thread.
