I have been writing a lot over the last 3 months, partly because it was a class for me, but partly because it is helping with my emotions about my past. Here is a poem I wrote about my childhood. It is getting published this week, which is my first, so I am so excited (well as much as I can feel being depressed. So I wanted to share it with you all since I am not up to conversations right now. I hope you like it.
Shipshewana Daze
Driving through her famous hometown
Those rural unforgotten smells
Reminds her of Ernie the straw-
Hatted Amish Pavarotti
Bellowing out dissonant
Dutch operas as his horse drawn
Cow plop salad shooter feeds the
Turned over corn stalk stumps black muck.
That summer she was taught how to
Pick ripe ears of Honey and Cream.
Finger indented kernel bursts
Its milky white seed impressing
Dazzled tourists as she sold
Bakers dozens for a dollar.
That summer Orva fell out of
The silo leaving twelve children
Fatherless and Di Blatt authorless.
Hundreds of buggies like a New York
Traffic jam rutted dirt roads deep
Made a jackhammer bike ride home.
Vegetable stand remained closed
Out of respect for the neighbors grief.
Orgasmically sweet cantaloupe
Her bonus for a job well done.
The summer when she turned thirteen
If only I had a time machine!

Hi and congrats on the pub.
just a note though on publishing...depending on where you are getting it published. some places consider a place like this a type of publication and they at least need/want to be notified of online publications.
so depending on your publisher you may want to make sure they know that you posted it here...just to make sure.b2c.

Hi B2,
It is nice to hear from you. I guess I will have to stop posting my poems here, if I ever want to get them published. lol Sorry I haven't kept in touch, I sort of fell off the turnip truck this month. I miss you.

this was in NO MEANS meant to STOP you from posting. in fact most places will STILL publish but sometimes they have to write under your poem where else it has been "published/posted" whatever.
for most places it's not a big deal.
****However its a matter of DISCLOSURE. Thats all.
NOT! meant to make you discontinue!i'm still posting, in hopes that one day i too can publish. but i'm keeping in mind that i would need to disclose that they were posted here under a pseudoname (sp??)
PLEEEEEEASE keep posting and writing.
its good to keep you here!!!!!!b2c.

That is beautiful. Wow, Happyflower, I'm so happy for you. And I've never understood poetry but this time, I think a miracle happened as I was reading, because I suddeny began to get pictures and feelings, and I absolutely understood what was happening, for the first time, I guess I just really opened up to inner knowing, relaxed into your verse, and it is so magical .. thank you for sharing it here. Where can I buy this???

Okay, you better stop, it is giving me a huge ego! lol But that is what poetry does, it makes you feel and from what I am learning, you don't even need to understand it either.
I see that in what you write, I am surprised you said you don't get poetry... seems like you do, you sure write it well enough.
It is funny on my Shipshewana poem, my prof. asked me What happened ? lol He told me I reached through to another level. Cool I thought. You really can't buy my poem, it is just in a college newspaper, small beans you know. I think it is coming out this week.
I am still learning my way through this, I am not sure what I am doing exactly all the time but it is inside of me and some how it come out on paper.
I think sometimes poems are so abstract it is hard to get anything from it, so I try to write what makes some sense to at least me. You have motivated me to keep going, thanks so much! I am quite the non confident poet. lol

If I have motivated you, there's no compliment in life greater than that. Wow, Happyflower. I'm so pleased for you, reaching through to other, greater levels, is what we're all about, as human beings.
You have my respect, Happyflower. And it's true, about me not understanding poetry, and i never saw what I write as such a thing, and that some people see it that way is so unbelievable for me. Is that what we truly really are, Happyflower? Is what we're made up of, is that poetry? Is that a human being?
I think it must be.
This is the end of the thread.
