A Matter of Time

Posted by Atticus on January 2, 2006, at 16:31:37

Hair like spider’s silk
Caught in the sunshine’s milk
Of a late winter afternoon,
Splayed across your neck
Like a comet’s flecks,
It won’t be seen again too soon.
Haley’s Lover streaks through my mind
And the glowing embers seem so kind
That I whistle a gypsy’s tune,
Stored nectar from spring’s blooms,
Cling to the thought
“It’s just a matter of time.”

City’s all sharp edges,
Steel and concrete wedges,
Concealing from me divine signs,
They proclaim “One Way,”
“No Exit” they say,
But I ignore their rusted lines
Spray-painted on cold steel,
Hieroglyphs that cannot feel,
Still I’d be in deep shock
To see your cornsilk locks,
Hear starling flocks
Cry, “It’s a matter of time.”

I wade through cold spray
On a damp New Year’s Day,
I wonder what can remind
You of what I had to say
On a summer’s wedding day,
Or have you just left it behind?
I long so for your arms,
And your Virginian’s charms
That I can’t see life any other way.
This time I pray you’ll stay,
But know below twilight’s gray,
“It’s not a matter of time.”

Hey Atticus (changed my posting name)

This poem brought back memories of feelings that I had in the very early days after leaving my ex-husband. I remember crying pitifully and very painfully at about 4am one morning and whilst rocking back and forth, I kept telling myself that one day I would be able to write about it, or talk about it, and it would not feel as if the very life was slowly being crushed out of me. I remember telling myself that it was a matter of time and that with time the hurt would fade. God knows I didn't want to believe it then. The hurt and trauma of that time took my life from me for a few years, but here I am now, a little stronger if not weather beaten, and enjoying little pleasures in life - such as reading your poetry!

I only wish I could break through to where you are emotionally, luv. I'm still as shattered as ever whenever I dredge up the nerve to tackle this most painful of topics. Everyone's always told me, "It's just a matter of time, boyo." But somehow, as each additional year accrues with no new true love, my hope continues to fade rather than renew. Ta. Atticus

I have noticed this in your writing. Despite what I said, I have always hated it when people tell me to give it time because its the last thing I want to consider.
My support remains with you as you try to deal with this.
