Flocks of Sleek Origami Cranes
Flocks of sleek origami cranes
Slice through the silent holy moment
That precedes the sacramental
Elemental cry of the dawn,
Wingtips leaving paper cut trails
In the tissue-thin skin of the sky,
Slits of bleeding red stratosphere
Leaking from roiling maroon clouds
As they shudder, convulse and glow
Before erupting into flames
The color of purest molten gold
That sluice over the brownstones
Like the hissing angry flow from
An alchemist’s spilled cauldron,
Startling teenaged rooftop lovers
Entwined upon their tarry beds
And huddled amid the razor-sharp shadows
Advancing across the urban mesas,
Setting unwary window panes ablaze,
Making whispering burning bushes
Of the anemic trees thrusting
Twisted limbs through portals
In the cracked and rippled surface
Of a sidewalk where homeless prophets
Hear commandments in their rustling leaves
As the cranes flare and flail
Like stars falling to ashes
Amid the atmosphere’s embracing heat,
And the lovers tremble briefly
When a sprinkling of dying embers
Dusts their warming bodies,
And their limbs stretch and straighten
Like luminous sheets of unfolding paper.
