Behind the Lens

Posted by Toph on September 6, 2005, at 18:23:42

Peer long into the madman's vacant stare
Whose retina seems detatched from cerebral
Thought, recollection, connection,
Dark pupils deep as an empty well.

Sight, sound sucked into the vortex
Swallowed by a torrent of fear and loathing
So powerfully consuming
That consciousness wanes.

I'm OK Susan. I haven't looked out of that well for a long time, but I see dispair in the eyes of a lot of the elderly I visit.

Is the despair out of not feeling like a life's been well-lived and now you're at the end of it? Is it from helplessness, hopelessness, loneliness, poverty, illness ... because I don't ever want to get to that, never, I want to avoid it like hell, it would be hell to live the end in despair. Better off dead.

It's hard to generalize, but yeah, most of those things plus a huge sense of loss - loss of their health, friends, family, community and an overwhelming fear that soon they will lose the last thing they care about... their home.

You are such a good man. You've got a big warm heart and so much kindess in you. It's always nice just knowing you're around. And of course you've helped me see 'man-boobs' and male nipples in a whole new light.

Thanks for being here mate.

I see you've kept abreast of my posts Damos.

You seem to be a considerate fellow yourself. If only kindness were currency, many of us here would be wealthy indeed.

You say a fair few things I don't think I'd ever find the courage to say. I like you too :-)

There really are some people who're so paranoid they would think my opening up was stupid; I know that. It's just because they don't know what they're missing. You gotta like yourself.
