Wake
It was an old time one
the booze in a room downstairs
Ray made it to 91
He was a cop, my old man's friend
and late '60's he let me know
a trip to jail might depend
on just what I had to tell him
as friend to friend.Nobody knew me but they remembered my old man
of course.
Salt of the earth, a little guy, but tough
[they didn't have to tell me.]
One old guy, tho, methusaleh's age
pulled me aside.
Said Ray kept me out of things,
just wrote me off the page
back then dealing dope was all the rage
So, I followed the funeral procession
and it was grand, really grand you know
A fire truck in the van and all the polished
cop-mobiles in a row.
But in the end I didn't go
My father's been dead and gone a long
time ago.And I found that I was crying as I turned the other way
for my old man and his friends
and my friend, Ray. cockeyed
