Wonderland Exile

Posted by Atticus on July 5, 2005, at 14:47:08

Caterpillar with a hookah
Sittin’, lookin’ blue,
Asks me if I’m a
Wonderland exile, too,
And I have to confess
To him that it’s true,
And I say, “Hey, man,
I’m just as nuts as you,”
So he takes a hit of hash,
Says, “How do you do?”
Offers me a magic mushroom,
Which I take and chew,
We talk about old times
And the little girl who
Once believed in us
But one day outgrew
The need for hidden realms
And started sniffin’ glue,
Moved up to crack and smack,
And never had a clue
That what she really missed
Was the very thing she slew,
Her faith in the fantastic
And what that faith could do,
So I just shrug and grin,
Say it’s time I flew,
And he nods sadly as
I fade amid the dew.

ooooh, ouch Atticus, that hurt. I've known so many substance abusers and this really seems to ring true somehow. Keep the faith :-)

I've know quite a few myself, growing up in and around the punk clubs of lower Manhattan. But I was also thinking of the narcotics as a metaphor for efforts by people with mental illnesses such as myself to get back to that "Wonderland" of our youth using psychotropic medications. It's all we've got, but all too often -- at least in my case -- the results have been ringingly disappointing. Atticus

No, I can't carry a tune in a bloody bucket. But recently my poems have taken on the aspect of song lyrics for whatever reasons. In my head, I can hear Bob Dylan traipsing his way through this one. Atticus

Hey, thanks for the response. you helped me out of a bad place after my attempted mugging. Yeah I was going to mention Dylan but I chickened out.Been doing a lot of that lately. Christ, I envy your rhytmic sense. thanks again, cockeyed.
