mirror

in the mirror i see
shades of you
brown hair
blue eyes
wide hips
lumpy thighs

in my life i see
traces of you
love of music
and quiet places
books of the mind
practical shoes

in my mind i hear
echoes of you
brooding for endless days
inflexibility
anger at perceived slights
despair

i see myself slipping
slowly
away from my son
as you slipped
slowly
away from me

why must we
be so alike
you and i
why must i
feel the effects
of years piled upon years

why can’t i
smash the mirror
and move on
