Day before yesterday
There was a time
When I slid along,
Stiletto-sharp and feline,
A hair-trigger pistol,
A hormonal gold mine,
A two-bit tomcat
Strutting in his prime,
A Twilight Zone lover
In decaying sunshine,
Watched day rot away
And I didn’t mind,
Never looked ahead,
Never looked behind,
But sidewalk strays
Can find the stars unkind
As the yarn of the fates
Continues to unwind
And the neon’s fierce shriek
Leaves them deaf, dumb, and blind,
’Til the night’s sirens
No longer seem so fine.
