we are born
and before its shining fades we die;
so brief is life.
Chasing glory and love
They are shadows in a dream:
To wake up is to die!

Hi Malthus,
The transitory, eye-blink nature of human existence transformed into a flash of lightning that leaves retinal images on the eyes long after what we saw is gone, along with ourselves. Yet at the same time, that flash of lightning, however brief, bespeaks great power, great passion, great accomplishments. This poem really captures that paradox -- and brings to mind figures such as Cobain, Hendrix, Charlie Parker, Billie Holliday, and of course, Mozart. Nicely done! ;) Atticus
