poem ... Leavin' the Grin of a Sinner

Leavin’ the Grin of a Sinner

Unproven groovin’ troubadour
Doffs his hat my way,
A trippy ’50s fedora,
As if to say,
“Brother, I’m glad
You come by today,
Down in the No. 1 tunnels
Where the sun don’t play,”
And his pock-marked Gibson
Got somethin’ to say,
But the screeching preaching
Of the subway wheels say, “No way,
I’m not havin’ any of that
While my steel wolves bay,”
As they lope along rails
Shooting sparks in the fray,
Tryin’ their damnedest
To make the world seem more gray,
And I toss a buck into his guitar case
Then gasp a raspy, “Hey,”
’Cause the dude looks just
Like Bobby Dylan in his Village heyday,
And I’m thinkin’ I must be trippin’
As he fades away,
Leavin’ the grin of a sinner
To shimmer and sway
Amid the rustle of commuters
Pimpin’ on their way to their pay,
’Til the smile’s gone, too,
But not a long way
As it stretches my face
And it settles to stay,
So I pop in my headphones
And I think I just may
Write a verse on the train,
Skip work and just play.

Hi Atticus:

I think I know where the fedora image comes from-the same cat wearing the lethal racoon coat? He was swayin' and so were we after that two martini lunch on Walnut. Loved meeting you...

Hi Malthus!
You're spot on about the origin of the fedora that I put on the Cheshire subway musician. I tried to include the raccoon coat, too, but it slowed the beat of the narrative just a little too much. Still, that's the kind of image that sticks in my head and turns up in various forms in all my poems set in Manhattan. Loved meeting you, too, of course! Ta. ;) Atticus
