Atomic Sonata in Beef Major
Slithering slap bass with tender tendon strings
Wails to passion-fashioned Armstrong coronet solos
Amid all the winding commuter corpuscle tunnels
That echo the insistent persistent strains
Of a down-and-dirty atomic sonata in beef major
As calcified starry-eyed cellular lovers jitterbug
To loose-as-a-goose ligament licorice-stick
Hepcat low-down socket-joint jazz sorcery
That would make Coltrane grin at the sweat spiked with gin
Improvising red-hot fleshy rhapsodies that skate
Like smack-packed angels on a high-voltage dewdrop
Across electric Kool-Aid acid test Jimi-drenched entwining skin,
So often described but so indescribable,
Baby, you can’t explain sweet growly sax sex to a nun,
Can’t scat sing riffs etched in twisting treble-clef DNA sheet music
That sends floating scraps of Mississippi Delta blues slide-guitar
Riding the muggy wind currents across chocolate-milk waters
To a distant riverbank deep in the gut
Where it stirs the blood’s imagination and longing.

Atticus,
Your writing style is incredible. I often re-read them and find something new each time. You seem to wrap so many things into your poems. Intelligence, style, rhythm, sensuality. I enjoy them.

Thanks so much, AdaG. I really appreciate your comments. I enjoy writing this kind of trippy neo-Beat poem. The title actually came first on this one, melting into my consciousness when I was in the meat section of the supermarket, of all places. Stay well. Ta. ;) Atticus
