Evil Flying Monkey Blues
Flying monkeys perch and flutter
In simian sullen muttering groups,
Dressed in shabby unraveling
Uniforms adorned
With degraded faded epaulets,
Scattered like
Furry fallen angels
Gathered in concrete
And bench conclaves
Across Washington Square Park,
Testily checking out
The want ads
In the back
Of the Sunday Times,
Pulling maximum tokes
Of the aromatic smoke
Of fat smelly
Phillie Blunts,
Packed with fine sweet weed
From the fertile fields
Of the merry land of Oz,
And the rich mixed scent
Of the cigar tobacco
And magical marijuana
Causes me to pause
And draw a deep
And soothing breath
From the spreading fumes. And I know the monkeys
Are soaring high
Without flitting
A single feather,
Riding perfumed thermal updrafts
On stoner automatic pilot,
Pondering the good old days
Before some b*tch
Turned their boss
Into a puddle,
Leaving them unemployed,
Devoid of joy,
With no green cards
In the savage, ravaged world
Where they thought
To make a brand new start. But it turns out
That even being
An evil flying
Flunky monkey
Won’t get your foot
Into the g*ddamn door
To conjure and conspire
With the wily wicked wizards
Whose glass castles
And twisted crystal balls
Line the rancid ramparts
Of Wall Street
Like a row of tombstone’s shadows.“Where are we supposed to go?”
A nearby winged monkey asks,
Shedding emerald-tinted tears,
Crumpling the paper into a ball.
I say after a pause,
“You gonna bogart
That whole blunt
Or are you gonna share?”
So he passes
The joint to me
And I draw
A long harsh wicked hit,
And as Oz cannabis rain
Falls in my brain,
Ask, “Have you tried
Halliburton?”

Hi Jai,
I'm glad you missed my poems, but it really hasn't been all that long. I posted the previous one on Monday, and today's poem on Thursday; that's only two days without posting poems. I think that work has gotten so intense that I'm burning up all my writing energy churning out press releases and publications, and I only have a finite amount of it to put to use. Last week, on a dare to myself, I decided to see if I could write and post a new poem for seven consecutive days. But that was a slower week at work, and it actually left me kind of toasted. This is a pace, every third day or so, that I can live with more easily. Ta. ;) Atticus
