writing my biography

Posted by mmerrynick on September 27, 2004, at 12:45:39

I am 49 and have been out of the hospital for 8 years. I am in the process of writing my biography which included an interesting long-term hospitalization at the New York state Psychiartric Institute with world famous doctors who were truly terrible. Anybody have any ideas they would like to share or words of encouragement?

I'd be very interested to read it. I've also spent time in state psychiatric wards, and have never seen any adequate descriptions of what happens in these places, both the good and the bad. Have you started writing yet?

Thanks for the e-mail. Psychiatric Institute isn't exactly a state hospital. It's a special hospital jointly run by New York State and Columbia Medical Center. Anyway, I would love to hear of your experiences in a hospital. Please write

I'll see what I can do tomorrow - don't have time to write now.

The hospital I went to was a teaching hospital, allied to the local university, but probably not as prestigious as Columbia. My experiences were not very unique or interesting, just formative for me. But nobody seems to have really described what it really is like to be on the other side of the locked door. I have read all the literature I have been able to find and it just doesn't capture it. What do you think?
