The essential feature of Dissociative Identity Disorder is the presence of two or more alternative identities associated with a single body. One of the most controversial issues that arises from this is how we are best to conceive of alternative identities. Within contemporary psychology and psychiatry two rival models have emerged as dominant theoretical positions. While they are typically considered to be mutually exclusive I shall attempt to recast the problem of alters in a way that is fairly neutral between them. This will involve a new application of a philosophical model of mind known as intentional systems theory. Intentional systems theory acknowledges that there may be a degree of indeterminacy with respect to what intentional state a system is in. If we conceive of alters or selves as a certain kind of complex intentional system, then it seems plausible that there may arise a similar phenomenon of system indeterminacy. The problem of alters may thus be re-conceptualised as the problem as whether to adopt a single or multiple systems interpretation of these subjects behaviour.

How do you interact with the "alters"? Do you only hear one at a time, or do you sometimes hear their voices in pairs or in groups? Do you ever hear the voices converse among themselves as if you were a bystander? This is all very new to me, DID, and I'm trying to understand what it must be like for you to live with this. Atticus

Sometimes one at a time and I can talk to them. Sometimes it is like being in a crowded room and you can hear a buzz of conversation, and make out angry voices and arguments etc but can't catch what they are saying, maybe only the odd word. Jasmine does indeed scream, which is hard to tolerate. I don't talk to them more than one at a time. Not sure why. I think that different peoples experience with this kind of thing can be very different, however. I guess in a sense I have fairly good communication whereas some people don't get the voices only the missing time and they need to communicate by journalling etc.

How do they get names....
do they appear with names and you find out?
When did you first notice them?
So some are angry but are others exhibiting other emotions.
Are you the central person?
Do you hear them night and day?
do they monitor your dreams?
do you dream?
How do you cope?
what happens if you drink?
Do the people around you know what you are experiencing?
I want to say that I appreciate you being open to my questions.
Sorry I haven't responded sooner.
I have been distracted by the hurricane Ivan.
I respect you and your contribution to this site.
You are important to me.
if my questions are out of line please tell me.
Thank you for your sharing.

I can only answer from my experience, other peoples experience with this may be different - as different as different people meeting the same DSM criteria tend to be
> How do they get names....
They just kind of occured to me and seemed to fit
> do they appear with names and you find out?
My personal opinion is that it is senseless to get enmeshed in the 'discovery or creation' debate. Names occurred to me shortly after I discovered / found them
> When did you first notice them?
13
> So some are angry but are others exhibiting other emotions.
Some are angry some times, others are angry at others. I don't think they have a predominant affect but I do think they fuful different functions
> Are you the central person?
to me :-)
> Do you hear them night and day?
yup
> do they monitor your dreams?
I am not sure
> do you dream?
sure
> How do you cope?
How does anyone cope? Sometimes not very well, at other times I do ok
> what happens if you drink?
Depends on what I am drinking. Sometimes I become hydrated, other times I become dehydrated :-) sorry, not sure I understand the question
> Do the people around you know what you are experiencing?
Some of them. There are a couple of people who know a couple of us
> I want to say that I appreciate you being open to my questions.
> Sorry I haven't responded sooner.
no apology necessary. Sorry I haven't responded sooner. I have to admit I was a little overwhelmed with all the questions. But I am doing ok, right?
> I have been distracted by the hurricane Ivan.
??? Is that a real hurricane, or a figure of speech?
> I respect you and your contribution to this site.
And I respect you and your sensitivity and creativeness.

Sorry, the discovery or creation debate is conflict between those who maintain that there is a fact of the matter as to how many there are, what their names are, and that they usually emerge before age 7 and are later discovered - and the view that they are created at the time you start to think / talk about them. (e.g. in therapy).
> ***My mother heard voices and they monitored her day and night and did a kind of voice over while she dreamed.
Wow, that is interesting. I guess that is hearing voices is part of your waking life, it makes sense that it would be part of your dreaming life too. I never thought about that before.
I didn't know about the hurricane. I don't read the paper or watch the news, so unless people talk about what is going on in the world I am pretty much oblivious. Are people / houses etc ok?

Hi,

*very interesting idea. I wondered if I had DID at one time. But I read the description and I have no lost time.
but one night I had taken a drug that gave me a "starry night" vision (like Vincent VanGogh) and time went so slowly that a minute seemed like hours. That same night I had to go to the bathroom and I preceived that 2 of me had to go but 3 of me were fine. So I had to wait till the 3 needed to go as well. I was so amazed by this that I wondered if I was in fact more than one person.
To finish the story we all went to the bathroom.
this gave me so much compassion for people with DID.To this day I am uncertain what happened.
I have had a very traumatic childhood.About news items: well I learn most of my news from this site.
but I'm a avid weather follower.
