A Parent
A parent is someone who loves you,
Who loves the you that you are,
and not merely the you that they want you to be,
who is interested and supportive of your dreams,
rather than their dreams for you.
An advocate,
a confidant,
empowering,
a friend.
A parent will never belittle you for your fears,
humiliate you on purpose,
abandon you, or threaten to do so.
A parent loves you,
wants the best for you,
and asks only that you do your best in return.
They are there with a hand when you fall,
a shoulder when you cry,
a kiss, when you need it, or not,
and a band-aid for the bumps and scrapes.
A parent loves you and wants the best for you.
They do all of these things, or at least try to.
A good parent doesn't have to ask or beg for love.

Me too.
What I wrote is the parent that I want to be for my children. It is NOT the sort of parent I had growing up, and, I expect it may not be the parent that many of us on this board had.
If I can't have had those parents, then I hope that I learned much from the ones I did have, by way of my pain. There were many hard lessons, but I'm determined not to hurt my kids the way I was hurt.
So, maybe that bit of prose is an idealization, but at least it's something to shoot for.Dee.

Dee...I am the parent that I didn't have. Oh how my children have benefited from my conscious decision not to allow the 'sins of the fathers' to be passed on. Thank you for this beautiful poem.
God Bless You..

Dee,
This is truly one of the most beautiful things I've read. Thank you for writing it. Bless you for being you. And thank the universe that you are the parent you are.
I sure do.
