I am writing partly to despell the myths people have and also to show that mental illness is as serious as any other illness. This is a highly taboo subject here but I really want to write something candid and realistic.

I guess the question is what do you want to get across when you have the ear of a roomful of people?

You could do something from the bad old days (poking holes in peoples heads, etc.) to the middle ages, insane asylums, to what it is now, and how learning influences treatment. Or, you might want to take the opportunity to focus on the fact that it's an illness similar to more physical ones (heart disease, diabetes) that can be helped often by meds; maybe including those folks who have to take meds that make them like zombies...but most people think it's better than the alternative (no meds). Or, stories from individuals who find themselves overtaken by mental health problems, and find so little that helps, and especially if they work with pdocs that they have to educate.

You can probably find enough ideas by looking through the archives here to get you on a path.

So, back to the original question--what do you want to convey? What is your passion about the issues?

Good luck,
Shar
