I am applying for a license as a psychological associate in the state of North Carolina. I have a Master's degree in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College, and the required 45 graduate credits. However, I have had trouble meeting some of the requirements exactly. Twelve of the credits I earned were from another institution, a Psychiatrist supervised my internship, not a Psychologist, and I graduated in 2004 so I do not have a licensed Doctoral level Psychologist to give me a reference even though I have worked in the field of psychology. Oh, and the board will not accept a reference from my internship supervisor, because according to their rules he needs to fill out a supervisor form, and those who fill out supervisor forms cannot fill out reference forms.
The last exception I think will be the most damaging to my chances for approval. I just want to know if other people have found Psychology Boards to have such restrictive rules, and if anyone has some advice for obtaining a reference from I Doctoral level psychologist. At this point I feel as though I am in a catch 22. In order to work with a Doctoral level psychologist I need at least a provisional license, but in order to get a provisional license I need a reference from a doctoral level psychologist.
Does anyone think the board will make an exception for me even in light of my other exceptions if I explain my situation? Any help or advice would be greatly appriciated.

As a licensed psychologist let me suggest that you find a licensed psychologist in the state you want to work, see if this person won't supervise, work with you, whatever for a time at least long enough to write a reference. Even if you have to work for free for a brief time, in the long run, it will help to have the reference.

You might also contact the NC Psychological Association http://www.ncpsychology.com/ They might be able to answer your questions and/or provide you with contact information for psychologists in your area.
