transference at work?

Can transference happen at work? Might this explain why I am crying over something that doesn't involve me personally and that I can't do anything about? It involves someone who I think might have become sort of a 'mother figure' to me.

Transference happens everywhere. They just put a fancy name on it for therapy.

But maybe you just feel bad about something bad happening to someone you like and respect. Is it something particularly unfair? I always get stuck on unfairness.
