Weaning off Diazepam

Posted by ronaldo on January 29, 2007, at 15:25:32

Hi

I have been taking Diazepam at 5 mg for the past month with enough pills left over to last me another month. I came by this Rx for 56 x 5 mg in the following way. I am coming off Olanzapine and I convinced my pdoc to let me have this Diazepam to help me to combat the rebound insomnia.

This is my second attempt at coming off Olanzapine. The first time I went cold turkey but the rebound insomnia was so horrendous I had to go back to 5 mg for one night and then taper from there. I got down to zero and held out for 3 weeks but again the rebound insomnia would not let me go and I went back on the Olanzapine at 10 mg.

This time I have taken 2 months to get from 10 mg down to 2.5 mg almost 1.25 mg. I have been taking 5 mg of Diazepam each night and have slept OK - not brilliant, just OK.

Now I want to know how difficult is it going to be to get off the 5 mg Diazepam. I will have been on it for 2 months. 5 mg is only a small dose. Do you think it will be easy for me to come off it? What kind of taper do you think will work best. I have just asked my GP for 50 x 2 mg Diazepam tablets. What is the best way to use them?

All advice gratefully received.

Regards

Hi Ronaldo,

Perhaps you could try something like this......

4mg for one week
3mg for one week
2mg for one week
1mg for one week
0.5mg for one week

Thanks Ed, I had figured something along those lines but I envisaged stopping at 1 mg after 4 weeks. I don't know if I can cut a 2 mg tablet down to 0.5 mg with any accuracy. I am surprised that Diazepam requires such a careful w/d. Anyway this is all a while in the future. First I have to get off the Olanzapine.

Hi 2dawgz

Thanks for your post and the valuable link. I feel like a bit of a fraud. I have only been on Valium 5 mg since 8 Jan 2007. It's not like I have been on it for years!

Still Prof. Ashton may still be able to help me.
