Is it Safe to use Xanax to ween off Effexor??? I am trying to get off of Effexor, by using Xanax inconjunction with Effexor. Is this safe/bad/good?
Thank you so very much,
Violet

Using a benzodiazepine to help discontinue Effexor is a good idea. People have had success using Ativan. Why did you choose Xanax?

Xanax should help a lot with any anxiety or insomnia problems. It also has a fair amount of antidepressant action in many people.
Why are you stopping effexor? Not working? Side effects?
Why did you choose xanax?
Just curious. Thanks!

Is this the first time you've used xanax? Good luck. Love Phillipa

Thank you so much for your input. I chose Xanax before because I have used it before and it is a fast acting med. Unfortunately, it has a short half-life.
Do people do better using Ativan???? Or should I try Valium with a longer half-ife??
Thank you,
Violet

Thank you so much for your input.
Effexor is working great for me, I have been on it for three years. I have gained about 15-20 pounds on it, which I know is not that bad, but it seems like every year an extra 5-7 pounds creeps up on me (and I have maintained the same food and exersize routine).

> Do people do better using Ativan???? Or should I try Valium with a longer half-ife??I like Ativan better because I believe it is a "cleaner" drug than Xanax psychotropically. You are less likely to fall in love with Ativan. I would have to research it more, but I think Ativan might have a more pronounced anti-kindling effect, which I believe would be important in helping to prevent the induction of the more severe of withdrawal symptoms.
Your suggestion of using Valium for its longer half-life is reasonable. I have not seen it used yet, though. Ativan seems to work. You might want to ask your questions over on the Withdrawal board.

You might want to ask your questions over on the Withdrawal board.I found some literature indicating that Ativan has more potent anti-kindling effects than Valium. It is a personal theory of mine that anti-kindling properties are important in treating Effexor withdrawal. Ativan might possibly be better than Valium if this is true.

Scott, for those of us, (okay, me) who are more than clueless, what is kindling?
Maybe it's me being Canadian, but I have visions of Bob and Doug's Strange Brew movie where one of them mentions "My brain's on fire, and I'm gonna start a few more fires, too."
But I'm still asking a serious question.

OK if it works for you. There are better techniques though.

Well, ye. Stop Effexor. Try several days of Prozac and then stop. That should do. If it doesn't - try 3 weeks of Prozac and then stop. That will 99# so. If not - post back. There are solutions even for that (-:
