Wellbutrin Cold Turkey

Posted by AnotherAnon on April 10, 2006, at 11:18:27

My pdoc told me to quit Wellbutrin cold turkey. I'm guessing since she told me it was ok, it's ok, but I'm wondering if anyone else has done this and what their symptoms were. I was on Wellbutrin for about three years...was on XL until last September than switched to SR because the generic is cheaper. Was on XL again for about a week, then the doc told me to stop.

My main complaint it this awful headache that feels like it's right at the base of my skull...ears feel clogged...pressure in the head that feels like it's going to pop right out of my skull!

Three times I stopped Wellbutrin "cold turkey". Two of those times I immediately switched to prozac and (not surprisingly) noticed no negative withdrawal symptoms at all. However, the other time I stopped cold turkey and replaced it with nothing else after around 27 months on the drug I did not fare well. I have MDD and with that comes serious fatigue and a lack of desire to do much of anything. Although it is claimed (I believe) that Wellbutrin withdrawal comes with few negative effects, I experienced (guess what) serious fatigue and a lack of desire to do much of anything. Although in comparison, it wasn't as bad as trying to withdraw from prozac. After about 6 weeks off of wellb, I went back on the drug for another year before switching to Prozac.

I never had a problem discontinuing Wellbutrin the few times I've been on it. That doesn't mean anything, though, as your biochemistry might be very much different from mine.

I should think that fatigue would be a problem.

You can either continue as you are and document for us your experiences (which would be very helpful) or restart it at half the dosage and reduce the dosage by 25mg every two days (just a guess).

Would there be any disadvantages to discontinuing the drug more gradually? If not, why suffer?

I think my pdoc wanted me off right away because she mistook my anxiety for mania (I've never had a manic episode). I just had really bad anxiety (with insomnia as a result) for two days that I think was caused by her putting me on Risperdal (I often have paradoxical reactions to drugs). Ativan helped the anxiety, but she wanted me off Wellbutrin immediately.

It's been a week since I took my last dose and the headache is finally subsiding somewhat. It's still there but it doesn't feel like my head's gonna pop. The fatigue is also subsiding somewhat. My new therapist yesterday said I seemed "flat" in comparison to last Friday, but I'd rather be flat than depressed or anxious. I think my "flatness" mainly was a result of the horrible headaches, fatigue and not eating enough.

I figure at this point, I may as well tough it out, since I did want to get off the drug anyway.

It seems like you've made it through the worst of it. Good luck with your next treatment regime.
