So scared

Posted by gee on January 8, 2006, at 1:47:25

For a while now, I've been thinking of stopping Effexor. A few weeks back I talked to my doc about it, and she was very insightful, and told me to take it very very slowly. Effexor has helped me a lot, and I'm scared of going back to the place I was at. Yet, at the same time, it's messing with my memory big time, and being a student and not being able to remember anything really isn't all that good. I scared that the side effects will be worse than what I know. Any ideas?

I am going through the same thing you are going through except I am getting tapered off of geodon. Like you, I am afraid. But I trust my doctor and also trust my judgement. I think you need to accept this one thing which is that if you do need to, take the medication for the rest of your life. It is more likely that you will need it at a much smaller dosage and will gain some of your memory back. It is also possible that you will succeed in getting off of the medication. Stay hopeful. I'm a nursing student, and have to take geodon for psychotic depression. I've adjusted to the side effect of falling asleep at earlier times and not having much time to study. I know this sounds a little sucky, but maybe you could try studying harder or find your own ways of remembering things. If you need to remember a list use achronyms. Also, to remember facts make funny ways to remember them. In my human sexuality class, I had to remember a long list of court cases having to do with sexuality and one was Goodridge v. Department of Public Health. This case made same sex marriage legal. My trick was thinking GOOD marRIDGE=same sex marriage. also goodridge. Everybody should do these kind of tricks. If you get good at it, then your lack of memory may become more to your advantage. Try doing this for your exams. It works. My illness really messes up my memory, but when I relapsed a couple of times, I still achieved a 3.7 gpa doing these tricks. Just try it. See if it works for you.

Thanks for the advice. A 3.7? That's amazing.

so if you dont feel that you are sure you are stable and the effexor is working for you why are you getting off of it? I think you can figure out a way to increase your memory but sanity is not something to play with...
If you are scared that go to a doc tell them your situation.. and go on something else...
take that with a grain of salt if you want but this is my input.

That's a good idea. I can't stay on this. The side effects are still too much.
