I have been going thru major financial probs. and have not be able to fill a rx for my prozac, i am suppose to take 40mg daily. Its been a week now. I am having headaches, which i assume are a side effect (withdrawl) but I am BP2 and already taking trileptal and lamictal. I am going to try to not take the prozac, and just continue my other meds and see how it goes.
If I am not feeling bad, should I continue to not take it????

Hi, it will probably take 2 month's before you know if the prozac isn't needed anymore, it actually takes 5 weeks for prozac to be fully excreted from your system!!! i was fine when i discontinued 2 years ago, [i'm back on it now though] i had some extra anxiety and early-morning awakenings, but those were the only side-effects i incured!! however 2-3 month's is the time-frame to know if depression will return, i had to go back on because i have ocd..john

I came off Prozac, 20mg. about a year ago by just skipping a day here and there and finally just stopping altogether. That worked for me. Can you drop 20mg. first and then eventually the last 20? Prozac has a long half-life so basically it tapers itself down once it's no longer in your system. I would try dropping by 20mg. at first though, that's my opinion. Best wishes!

Hi. I slowly started tapering off the 40mg/day dose to 40mg/10days over about a year's time. I took my last pill in early Sept. For the last two weeks I have been going through woozines/dizziness and insomnia (delayed sleep induction). You need to give your body a few months to adjust and modify your behaviour so as to not intensify the withdrawl symptoms and other symptoms that got you on the meds in the first place. I would talk to your doctor/therapist about behavior modification and alternatives to taking meds to ease symptoms, or find a new doc that does this. Some people have to be on meds because their body naturally doesn't produce the chemicals needed to function normally. I hope you can find out which treatment is best for you.
