Tapering Off Zyprexa Advice or Experiences?

Posted by blueberry on October 7, 2005, at 5:34:02

Anyone have any experiences or advice on withdrawing from zyprexa 5mg after 5 years of use? It no longer works...not good for sleep, did not protect me from mania, actually made it worse, especially at short term trials of higher doses, did not protect me from depression or anxiety, and the longterm blood sugar diabetes thing is worrying me. Depakote so far is working nice, but it's time to withdraw zyprexa 5mg.

I'm scared to go too fast. I was thinking 4mg for a couple weeks, 2.5mg for a month, 1.25mg for a month, 1.25 every other day for a couple weeks, and then try to let it go or take only as needed until finally off. I think my doctor will want me to withdraw faster than that, but I mean, 5 years is a long time. I think a 3 to 4 month weaning process is the way to go.

Any experiences or advice greatly appreciated.

Your plan is certainly a conservative one. If for some reason insomnia and anxiety become problems, you can try taking Benadryl or hydroxyzine. These drugs can help ease the withdrawal from the antihistamine properties of Zyprexa.

You should do just fine.

Please post as you progress through your discontinuation process. It will be very helpful to others.

So far so good. I have changed the 5mg once an evening dosage to 2.5mg in the evening and 1.25 during the day, about 12 hours apart, for a total of 3.75mg. That's about a 25% decrease in the dose I have taken for 5 years. No problems noted so far.
