Wernicke–Korsakoff Syndrome and binge drinking

Posted by AMD on April 30, 2006, at 19:20:33

Folks,

As many of you know, I've had a pattern of once- or twice-montly binge drinking over the past year, usually to black out and/or stupor.

I'd been having very clear thoughts lately, but went out Tuesday and drank myself silly.

Since then I've had a hard time focusing, that is, my thoughts have been disorganized and my memory inhibited. It's like my brain is firing all over the place, and I can't slow it down. I can't focus.

I was wondering: is it possible to develop a syndrome such as Wernicke–Korsakoff from this pattern over a year or so? I take vitamin B supplements and exercise regularly, yet I am scared these jumbled, disorganized thoughts won't disappear. Again, I was feeling an improvement before my drinking last week.

I just want my head to stop racing! It's not obsession, it's just a complete inability to concentrate. Almost a physical sensation in my brain.

Is this going to pass? Do you think I have Wernicke–Korsakoff Syndrome? Or another permanently debilitating disability?

Would an AP help with this? I have a prescription for Zyprexa and some Geodon left over. Wondering which might help with this. Also experiencing a mild depression.

TIA,

amd

I believe thiamine depletion is one of the things that leads to Wernicke-Korsakoff, so it's good that you are taking plenty of Vitamin B supplements. Still, are you thinking at all about getting treatment?
