I am finding it hard to type this out, because it forces me to face the facts(literally)as they presently are. After 20 years of Opiate Therapy for Chronic Pain,Stimulants for ADD (past 6 years),and a few Xanax thrown into the mix,I find myself in a struggle with the Stims.I'm almost done with taking the Opiates, slowly weaning off Methadone 120 mg. a day,to a current 20 mg.I hoped the cessation of the pain pills would help with coming off the Amphetamines. It is'nt.Does anyone have info or experience in this area? I can't shake the "need" for Stims.Festus

Hi Festus
You're down to 20mg/d methadone? It's a good dose. Just big enough to work, not so big as to make you too unwell. I can't help you with the stims really, except I wonder if it would help you cutting down if you were to take a protein shake for the aminos in the morning plus some B vitamins.
My assessment of where I am now with methadone is that it takes me round about 60 (sixty) days to go through 10(ten)mg. (This can sound very odd to anyone on a reasonable dose of methadone. Naturally they say 'If I got down to xmg/d, I would just stop) A very gentle taper, and it's difficult enough for me; but like most people I took opiates for a reason that is still with me, more or less.

Hey Declan,Man,ain't been around here much, lately, but I had to ask you how you "take 6 mos."to use 10mg of Methadone.I do understand how demonic it can be,as you drop your dose down below that 30mg mark,it starts taking just a few mg.at-a-time,to get some WD feelings. No Dr.,not anybody, can,TRULY,understand the way it is,unless they have been there.Later,Festus

Hey Declan,
I DO think it's amazing, but I also know how you must go by "The Feel",when you get where you are and where I'm heading for. Each person must adjust the dose to suit their own WD tolerance. It is NOT easily done, very often. Her in N.C.,there are not too many Dr.'s that will even write Rx's for Methadone.
I have used (after a 10 year abstinence) a bit of Herbal Puffing to aid in the WD's,and to help sleep. The Stimulants are my "Crutch".If I don't take em,I don't focus in on what people are saying, can't remember stuff, can't get motivated cause it feels as though I'm an invalid with Alzhiemers and no brain. It feels scary not to be able to hardly talk right, yet alone, to work with the Clients/Patients that come to get help or information or whatever.I'm worried I may have to take Stims forever, just to use my brain correctly (ADD and ADHD runs in our Family. Both my Daughter and Brother are treated for it,also).
I take Dexedrine 10mg.tabs,4-6,BID.I get to thinking about long-term side-effects.and how they could effect my health.Am I being paranoid? See Ya', Festus

Hi Festus,
I know what you're saying. Based on the medical literature that I've read, the doses used for attention deficit disorder are safe. Some people worry about unforeseen, long-term harm from stimulants. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any longitudinal studies that demonstrate their safety over an extended period of time. Still, I wouldn't sweat it. No, you're not being paranoid.
I take Dexedrine 10mg Spansules, 1 bid (20mg/day). ADD/ADHD runs rampant in my family too.
Rather than looking at it like a "crutch", look at it like a pair of glasses; or how a diabetic might look at their prescribed insulin. Certainly, you can choose to see the glass as half-empty. Ok, you're ADD/ADHD - so what? So am I...and more than 2 million others.
This is the end of the thread.
