Having a very hard time avoiding alcohol!

Posted by Colleen D. on November 13, 2005, at 20:51:01

Having a couple every night now, just to help me shut down my mind and go to sleep. Since I left my husband, an alcoholic, I've been affording myself this pleasure, but I can see how it easy could become a problem again for me. If I could just promise myself (and keep that promise) that I will not buy it. How do I get over this bump in the road?

What has happened in the past when alcohol became a problem for you?
Did it result in situations that you now regret?
Can you remember those occasions when you next get an urge to drink? Try to think of the worst outcome, what could happen if you let one drink turn into several, and how you will feel. (I've had some real doozies of experiences, and I remember most of them. This technique helps me a lot.)
Also, post here when you're feeling tempted and don't want to give in. You'll find support here with your fellow babblers.

I cannot offer any constructive advice, or even support - all I can say is that I understand. I promise myself on an almost daily basis that I WILL NOT BUY TODAY! It lasts until 10 minutes before the stores close.

Perhaps I should not have posted. But I needed to share that I really do understand.

Sabrina

PS. I divorced my ex-husband because of alcohol and drug abuse.

I'm lucky that my 3 kids keep me busy and I do not have many options as far as getting out to the store for a late run - LOL!

My two biggest concerns are the health risks for me and that I'll overdo it ONE time and end up in jail for drunk driving. This has not happened to me in the past, but also I feel like a huge hypocrite for drinking and smoking pot when those were the two main reasons I left my soon to be ex. I keep imagining my doing stupid stuff while drunk and high resulting in my losing my kids, and then having to see them go and live with their dad.

I managed to pass up the beers tonight. :-) There are two in the fridge and they would make a nice nightcap, but I think I'll reward myself with a Dove ice cream bar and that'll help me get through this night. But I'm still thinking about drinking them...ugh!

Thanks for listening and helping me identify why I should not drink.

Colleen
