alcoholism and campral

Posted by Phoenix2121 on November 6, 2005, at 8:21:03

Has anyone had any experience with campral and how it helps to maintain sobriety? I started it about 2 months ago and I feel it has been a great help in ruducing the need I've had in the past to stop by the store and buy a bottle. I still think about it but I' been able to resist. My psychiatrist is prescribing it. No side effects. I feel this is a tool that will help me stay on track. Any other experiences or comments about campral?

I started taking Campral in August and have been sober ever since. It's the longest I've been able to go without a drink since 2000. I see a therapist and attend support meetings (I'm also being treated for depression and anxiety which is how I got to Psycho Babble).

I can't detect any side effects with this medication. It has given me back a huge chunk of my thoughts that had been preoccupied with drinking. What a freedom to have been given!

Welcome to the boards. I look forward to seeing you around here.

I asked my Pdoc about prescribing this for me the other night and he refused. Said it hadn't been on the market long enough.

All I can say is "phooey," because what I've read here (especially from ClearSkies) says it really helps.

Anyone have opinion on how helpful it is if the alcohol problem coexists with other substance use problems?

Hey Phoenix2121,
I'm trying to get on the Campral bandwagon too, since I seem to be having problems with Antabuse (see my other thread in this forum). Like one of the other posters in this thread, though, my shrink has been reluctant to prescribe it for some reason. I see him again this week. I'm going to push for it again, since I can't trust myself not to drink if I have to stop the Antabuse.

Besides the side effects with Antabuse, I'm not fond of having cravings anyway while I'm on it. Something like Campral that stops the cravings seems like the logical way to go.

Thanks for reporting your experiences with Campral. It gave me a morale boost.

Best of luck with everything,
Reggie BoStar

Does your p-doc know that Campral has been prescribed in Europe for 10 years? It's only new to the North American market. You think the people it's helped over there would be proof enough of its efficacy!!
Give it another push...
take care

Not to be a wet blanket, but what happens when one stops taking the Campral? Mama

My doctor told me I'll be on it for about a year, at which time I *should* have the psychological tools (healthy habits and attitude) to retain my sobriety. I am really encouraged so far. I don't know if it will require a taper or not - I started on it at a full dose.
