In a word, yes; when you work your program. Doesn't matter what the substance is. Common thread? Again, yes! Seems that all who succeed in their 12 steps had a common sense of never being ENOUGH.
Life is complicated and dangerous for sure. When the addicted soul feels puny, ingesting enough substance to the point of euphoria, gives them the illusion that they are big and all their problems and conflicts are small; that all their detractors and others they might fear, are now puny.
Seeking the "feel-good" that accompanies the substance being abused is never completely fulfilling, so you must continue seeking even more substance. Eventually, one drink/hit/slice-of-cheescake is toooo much and the whole bottle/rock-pipe/cheesecake is never enough!
Picture this. If you do good deeds, you are left with good feelings. If you take a shortcut by seeking "feel-goods", you are left with yourself and little else.
