Cultural influence - most Brits drunk after lunch?

Posted by Fred23 on October 26, 2004, at 18:20:35

The article at http://www.startups.co.uk/Ye_rUStojdegVw.html has the lead in:

"An alarming 76 per cent of employees are coming back to work drunk after taking
a `liquid lunch', according to a new survey."

So it may be those in the UK face a bigger challenge in their work environment than in the US?

I've worked blue-collar jobs - mostly construction and railroad - both in the US and Germany and what amazed me is that in Germany it was customary to drink beer with lunch and during the afternoon break. We drank beer right on the construction site. In the US, I would have been fired for drinking even one beer during lunch.

I'm sure more drinking goes on among the US white collar crowd during lunch (martini lunch) but the blue-collar crowd waits until after work to get blind drunk (makes up for it)

I've heard that inhaling alcohol has caught on in the UK. Have you heard of that? The alcohol goes straight into the bloodstream without the ill-effects of drinking it.

I saw a news clip about that, but that while a nice idea, it didn't actually work.

(A good vodka drink is very effective for avoiding the "ill-effects of drinking it," IMHO.)

It's kind of accepted to have a drink at lunch..There is a big alcohol problem here.. Brits binge drink till coma ..only seems to be the white population.
I sometimes used to drink while working...others used to smoke weed.
