librium vs valium vs ativan

Posted by TDog on June 22, 2004, at 13:27:55

Which is better, valium or librium, for the immediate relief of anxiety for a person with an anxiety disorder? Which is stronger? More addictive?

Also, I am already on klonopin and am looking for a fast acting benzo like valium and librium. i'd like to avoid xanax. how is ativan? would it be better than valium? is it more addictive than valium?
any comments or answers would be greatly appreciative. Thank you! -TDog

In my experience, Valium is better and stronger than Librium. (I can't say for sure, but I would assume that probably means Valium is also more likely to lead to addiction than librium.)

In my experience, Ativan is your best bet for fast action: they sell sublingual Ativan tablets that dissolve underneath your tongue and go straight into your bloodstream via all those little blood vessels on the underside of the tongue. I am pretty sure that both Valium and Librium tablets must be swallowed, which means that it'll take longer for them to take effect (especially if there's any food in your tummy). I also found Ativan to be less sedating than Valium and Librium, which is good if you do intellectually demanding work for a living and need to stay sharp ... and which is not so good if you have insomnia and want to be sedated. For what it's worth, my doc at the time said that he believes Ativan to be less likely to lead to addiction than Valium.
