Alcohol Withdrawal

Posted by Sophie33 on April 9, 2004, at 4:19:36

Anyone out there getting off alcohol? I've been "without" for almost 2 weeks. The first few days were ok-but days 5/6 were "HARD!" and I'm feeling pretty good now. I'd like to know if anyone out there is feeling the same way.

All I can tell you is that it gets better. Your withdrawl symptoms are directly related to how much and how long you had been drinking (every day for 18 years for me - and it took me about 4 weeks to feel human again).

Stick with it - it's the best thing you can do for yourself!

I meant that when I drink I become much more aggressive and "angry". In a social situation, ie. going out for dinner with friends or going to a club/bar-I was definitely a lot of fun to hang out with-but if I was sad, or angry, or generally in a bad mood-the alcohol brought out those feelings ten-fold. It got to the point where I was saying things and doing things, I would NEVER in my sober mind be doing.

So, in "crazy" I meant that it made me such a loser! And not a person I wanted to be! Already, since 2 weeks of not drinking everyone and I mean everyone I hang out with says that i've become such a more level person. And that makes me feel good.

I know that 2 weeks without drinking is really a short short short time-but hey-it's a start. And for me it's a good one. Last night I really (and I mean REALLY!) wanted to have a drink (something completely stressed me out) but I occupied myself-took a bath-walked around a bit-and the feeling past. The old me would have drank a bottle of wine and gone to bed. But I got through the situation and ended up having a really nice night.

Anyway, the point is that alcohol affects everyone in different ways-for me it takes however I'm feeling and magnifies it. Do you know what I mean?

yeah i tottaly get you, im so happy you have decided to stop drinking, i've seen what it can do to people, i used to drink tons too before i started the meds, i was tottaly self medicating, sometimes it was the only way i could leave the house. Im getting better with the drinking thing too, in five weeks ive had a total of 5 beers. now THAT is not like me;)

I hope your journey without alcohol becomes easier and easier, 2 weeks is a long time with out! i remember when i had to take anti-biotics for a week it would send me in to crisis cause i could not go 7 whole days without a drink!

:) thanks for replying, and good luck to ya:)

I am hoping for the best for you.

Thanks for sharing. I'm in day 2, have the flu-like symptoms, wandering aimlessly sometimes, but getting more done around the house. I know it will be a long journey, but anything has to be better than the loneliness and lack of life. Thanks again.
