I have been taking Xanax, but since my fiance died last Sunday I've doubled up on my dose just to cope. It's not making me sleepy, just functioning. I didn't want to develop a bigger dependancy to Xanax, so the doc gave me Klonopin. I take one or two mg with an otc sleep aid, and I feel nothing. With the Xanax, I'd literally pass out at night. What's the deal? They are both benzos, and I've taken these before with different results. Could the pharmacy have given me the wrong meds?
TIA!
Lindsay

doubt it, as clonazepam is somewhat weaker than xanax. if you had been taking xanax for awhile, then the clonazepam will just not have the same effect. he probably prescribed it to you as more of an anti-anxiety drug. take it for awhile and your body will become accustomed to the difference in strengths and adjust...

Withdrawl from any benzo can be really nasty and dangerous. People are more generally aware of the risks of opiate withdrawl, but benzos can be as bad or worse for some! Don't stop taking the Klonopin at once, gently wean yourself over the course of a couple of weeks to avoid withdrawl symptoms. Strangely enough, benzos can be more addictive than opiates!

Klonopin is 1/2 as potent as alprazolam (Xanax) at a given does. The rate at which a drug is absorbed and crosses the blood-brain barrier has a big impact on how "high" it makes you feel. Also, Xanax has a relatively short half-life, while Klonopin is designed to remain in the system quite a bit longer.
