Ciggarettes Kill!

Posted by Sebastian on September 7, 2003, at 10:12:36

Why can I go on a 3 day none stop all out crack binge, smoke $2000 in crack, then stop. Not touch the stuff for another 5 years, go on anouther day long crack binge, and get sick of the crack. Haven't touched the stuff since. Also, little flirts with cocain, just totaly not injoy the high, and give that up too. I almost ODed on extacy laced with haroin, never touched that again. A week of meth pills, where I was out of control taking it, eventualy gave the rest of them back to the seller, never touch that again. Drank like a fish, for 3 years, every day, gave that up.

, but not with ciggarretts? My smokes I just can't give up?

I read an interesting article in NIDA news letter. People who suffer PTSD are many times more likely to abuse ciggarettes than any other drug.

Sebastian

Wonder if this is my problem?

I read it off of a paper printed article, printed for the social worker.

Ah I see it now. It seems they were writing an article about the affects of September 11th played in depression and PTSD with drug and alcohol abuse. It states 'Stress has long been recognized as one of the most powerful triggers for drug craving and relapse to drug abuse' I guess some of my reasons for starting to smoke cigarettes was because I was stressed~after all, I was a patient for the first time in a psychiatric hospital. I wonder about this though.....Dr. Jacques Normand went on to state 'People who experience major trauma and those with PTSD or depression may self-medicate with drugs or alcohol to relax, cope with stress, or relieve symptoms' I was 7 years old when I went through my first traumatic episode
(a rape) I wonder if that has an effect on why I may smoke cigarettes as opposed to using drugs and/or alcohol moreso? I was glad to read that they had a lot of data and that they were interested in doing follow-up studies on the subject.
Good article Seb
Thanks.

rape is cosidered in other contries to give PTSD. Ciggs were always my first coping mecanisem for stress. Especially after my two freinds blew up on an oil tank. Later I learned of ones death and got major depresion, so ya, I belive the article.

People with mental illness have a higher smoking rate. Ever try to quit while you're depressed. When you do quit, depression often returns.
Try not to pressure yourself on quitting, just give it a go when the time is right.
You really have to want to quit and not give yourself the option of going back.
