I have been described as having very poor social skills by my pdoc but nobody has explained exactly what they are. I've tried googling but get vague/generalised answers. Can anyone help?

I guess it's a hard question to answer. Have you asked your proc to be more specific? Where does s/he see you lacking? There's no real clear definition of "social skills" so it's not surprising that google doesn't turn much up. Do you have problems making friends? Sustaining relationships? Dealing with workplace interpersonal stuff? If so, do you see a therapist to discuss these issues?
Sometimes, if people have difficulty with relationships and "social skills," group therapy can be very helpful, since other group members will notice areas where your interpersonal interactions cause problems.

it is hard to know without more specific feedback. it might be that your manner rubs people up the wrong way. if you interact with people without doing a whole couple minutes worth of looking and smiling and generally making sure the other person is at ease then people will often interpret you as being rude or abrasive or whatever.
it might be that your social reciprocity judgements are off. for example, some people might give you things... and you don't keep an appropriate mental track of that in order to reciprocate appropriately. they reckon that depressed people tend to underestimate what others do for them and overestimate what they do for others (compared to how others judge them, anyway).
it might be that you misinterpret others intentions. that other people make friendly gestures or whatever and you see malevolent intent.
so many things it could be...

What your doc should have said is that you are lacking in social skills. Have you considered therapy because I can recommend a few very good therapists.
Beats, hey you have very poor social skills. See you in a month.
Group therapy can be great but many therapists run their groups where anything goes. Getting feedback from 7 people with no diagnosis, but needed one, and you could end up having a very confrontational group. I walked out on mine because I was ready to kill a few people there. the therapist sucked.
Just go to a supportive group if you decide to do group.

Hi Firemonkey,
I have social anxiety so my social skills aren't the greatest either. I also don't smile very often so I look like I'm angry at someone when I'm not. I make an effort to smile and not a complete fake one like Sheldon on "Big Bang Theory."
Definitely next time you see your pdoc ask him/her what do you mean by poor social skills? What are you seeing or hearing? Do you sit and glare at him/her (Dr. Clueless understands that's how I am, first pdoc didn't and slapped me with the wrong DX).
