Yeah. It was, uh, kind of a big deal. Ending apartheid in South Africa and all. Did you know he did that? Kind of cool.
Sh*t.

The Springbok tour here was so big in what was it? 74 or so? State of Emergency declared by one premier. I recall being taught how in apartheid each colour had its own territory with some of the best land in Transvaal reserved for blacks. Since we could not even claim that, we had no trouble seeing South Africa as like us (and vice versa). Which was why the Springbok tour was so important, to say no. Not that we managed to do much about it here. We still have Australia Day, there is still Columbus Day.
I was interested in how, after his release from jail, an exact replica of his prison accommodation was created for him, down to the position of the light switches. And he liked his papers neat and parallel. 27 years in prison is a long time. I don't know if there have been too many like him. He is said to have preferred Nehru to Ghandi.

i wondered why this hadn't made bigger headlines. but... he was old. and had been very sick for a while now.
i have faint memories of kiwis boycotting the springboks rugby tour in protest of apartheid.
i find it... interesting? (is that the word) how separate sovereignties (what some maaori say they want for maaori in nz) is different from aparteid. if, in fact, it is.
i guess there is all the difference in the world between being forced to do something (remain separate, integrate) and having the option.

Enormous headlines here. Big headline quotes from world leaders and the impact his life had on them and their world. Of course we had someone call him a terrorist.
Haven't heard of many genuine opposition parties that did not start out in violence.
He was held in reverence by many here. I include myself, for the positive influence he had on the country's leaders.
I am happy he finally has peace instead of having to survive as an icon.

>for the positive influence he had on the country's leaders.
Which I guess does include those who labelled him a terrorist, and those he opposed openly later.
He seemed to have a positive influence on everyone without losing his principles.

I know all these people from back then. The game was turned into an armed camp.

I don't know much about South Africa but it sounds like there were a huge number of problems before the apartheid and a huge number of different problems afterwards.... not that I'm suggesting the apartheid was in any way acceptable. Seems highly complicated politically.
This is the end of the thread.
