I focused on the ceiling fan
As I lie in bed
Could it surely support my weight
When I longed for deathI haven't any family
I don't see my friends
It doesn't matter anyway
When it comes to the endI'll send the police department
A simple note that says
Come to apartment 8
I'll be hanging out in thereI'll write my own obit
And pack it full of lies
A hardened criminal I was
Loathed and despisedBut there is no ceiling fan
There's no apartment eight
I've been institutionalized
since 1958Six point restraints
Thorazine every day
One meal if I'm lucky
I can't eat anywayIt was a common misdiagnosis
That mistake landed me here
I stare through the bars at the courtyard
I so wonder what it's like out there.

Not at all, just tired and scattered. That poem borrowed from two sources, Elyn Saks, the brilliant university professor/scholar/ schizophrenic who has been institutionalized many many times. Go to TED Talks and hear her short presentation of her life, she's amazing.
My mother was committed when I was 16. We walked out in the courtyard and the building on the left, the third floor, had bars. Those were the criminally insane. It left quite an impression on me. I think this writing is just addressing some of my experiences.
Thanks for asking.

Hi Phil,
Have you considered hiring out to Black Sabbath? If not maybe I can write some guitar to this :-)
TamThis is the best Ive seen of your poetry yet!
PS Did you know the Wall by Pink Floyd was written because on of the members of the band was in a mental institution for a while?
