I want to live somewhere else

Posted by sleepygirl2 on July 7, 2013, at 11:25:20

I want a 1 bedroom apartment with a little balcony.
I want the inside painted all white, because I have more than enough pictures for it.
Sound good?
Please respond with living preferences.

I love where I live because, even though its right on a subway line, I am surrounded on all sides by trees. From May through October, I can look out any window and watch leaves sway in the wind. Also, I never before had an apartment with windows on all sides. For years, I lived in an apartment that had only north-south exposures. The front rooms had north exposures, so were dark all day. Now I have light from the east, west and south. It's great.

I've lived here for three years and gave up a lot in convenience to stores and stuff to live here. But I can still get into the city quickly on the subway, so it's good. My last place was so dark and just looked out onto other apartments. I didn't like being there at all during the day and I work at home a lot. But it was convenient to everything, so I'd take my computer to a coffee shop or park and work there.

I need three bedrooms. One for me, one for my husband (who snores so badly I can't share a bed with him) and one for my daughter when she's home or other visitors.

My new place has a balcony. I never had one before and it's great in the warm weather.

I love where I live too. It's a 3-story townhouse, with light from the east and west, 3 bedrooms, a small library, an office, a living-dining room and garage. The house is Federal in style, but the furniture inside is contemporary, with bright Marimekko pillows. There is a little garden, with three birch trees, and flowers chosen for low/no maintenance - day lilies, clematis and azaleas with lots of mulch. We raised our son here, had our friends over so many times, and it would be hard to imagine moving.

Not here. Nothing but rain and looking for something where it's warmer like Florida. NC I've never liked. I did love VA Beach & Chesapeake though and the homes I owned there. This one the location for here is upper scale but too many elderly which I'm also getting to be. Want to be around a mixture of ages. Phillipa

It sounds peaceful.

I need a yard. I have large personal space needs. :)

I'm happy enough with my house, though I would prefer to live where it doesn't get so *&)#@ hot. I hate heat.

If I could afford it, I'd love to have the same sort of house in the Pacific Northwest. It doesn't get that hot there, I think. Or North Carolina, though I might not like the winters in the mountains where I'd like to live.

So, I'm ok with my immediate space. But I'm fed up with the heat.

I hate the heat too. I could never live in the south. I live in Boston and we typically get a heatwave or two lasting a week or two. Extreme humidity. I hate it. I hate it worse than I hate cold snaps. Or do I? My husband and I were talking about that recently -- what's worse, 100 degree days and humid in the summer or 10 degree days and freezing in the winter? It's easier to stay warm in cold weather than cool in hot weather, but the truth is, both stink. What I love about the northeast are the long falls and springs.

i really want / need my own place.

i can't really relax if i feel like someone will do the knock knock knock and then barge in thing.

or, if they bang insistently expecting an answer since they know that i'm home.

isn't it odd how they think i'd be rude to ignore them and yet they don't think they are rude for requiring my attention when i'm busy attending to other things.

isn't it odd how they think i'm being rude in turning down invitations to dinner and yet they don't think they are being rude in expecting / demanding my presence.

as soon as i go into the kitchen someone manages to place themselves in front of whatever it is that i need yapping incessantly about nothing so i can't get hot water from the kettle or a spoon for my yoghurt or whatever without 'rudely' interrupting them to request they move out the way.

why can't people just leave me be?

i do need to live with other graduate students / academics.

it is a different way of life. it isn't a way of life that very many non-academics understand... i can say 'i just want a quiet space so i can get on with my thesis' until i am blue in the face... i may as well be speaking in klingon.

and of course it isn't quite about that...

home for me... is a refuge from people. i don't want to socialize with people at home. when i want to socialize i want to get away from home to do it. i've moved wings in a hall of residence because i found myself making friends with (hanging out with) the people in my wing. once i moved i visited them a lot. but i needed my own home to get to at the end of the day. the people in my wing... ships passing in the night. because i would of course rather have my own place. where i didn't need to wait for the bathroom or for you to get out of the kitchen. where i didn't have to listen to your tv noises. where i didn't have to wear headphones so i didn't disturb you with mine.

i just want to do my thing...

i can only relax when i'm alone.

I didn't know that where you were escaped the heat. New Orleans isn't as hot as some places in the northern South, it seems.

I'm fine with cold weather. As you say, it's far easier to stay warm. But....

I'm relatively sure I don't want to add snow shoveling and snow tires to lawn mowing. :)

New Orleans can be very nice between October and perhaps April - or even May this year. Winter only shows up a few days a year, and the rest of Winter seems more like Fall. Spring comes in February.

So if I ever won the lottery, I wouldn't mind having a winter home here and a summer home someplace cooler.

(I buy the occasional lottery ticket just so I can say things like that.)

I definitely like the fall. Spring is nice for a while, but then it turns into summer. Sweating... Yuk
I like to be alone too.
I can take socializing in small doses, and I absolutely have to be comfortable with someone to hang out with them outside of work, or, in the past, after school.
I'm very cautious.
I'm chronically not getting enough alone time.
But I'm sitting at a park right now, by a bay. :-)
With the breeze it's alright.

I like San Francisco. It's so freaking hot here now. I hate it. I freeze my butt off in the winter and melt in the summer. I wish our temperature was more moderate.

We have crazy extremes here. It can get down to negative 40 C, then in the summer it can get into the positive 30's.

Which city do you live in Deneb. My daughter is in Montreal and she's gotten used to the weather. Mostly I think she's gotten used to her boyfriend, job, life and puts up with the weather.

I live in Ottawa. I'm used to the cold, but because our summers are fairly short, it's hard to get acclimatized to the warm weather when it hits all of a sudden. It also seems be to hotter than other years.

I'm fairly happy where I am now climate-wise. But then I liked Southern Australia, too. Fairly similar, I guess. Temperate and not too humid.

Some people miss the seasonality, but I've never had it so don't miss it.

On the one hand I really like native bush. Birds, in particular, wildlife noises. Bubbling water, even. It would be nice to have a place that had a lot of glass that looked out over that kind of scene. Preferably with no people. Just nature.

On the other hand, I don't drive so need to be (ideally) walking distance from where I want to go or (less ideally) close to (regular) public transport.

I like the idea of an inner city apartment in a large town / small city. Small enough for people to be reasonably relaxed and for there to be medium density old buildings where you can get a floor to yourself above a cafe or something like that.

There was a bit of that in the city... In Hamilton, Melbourne, Wellington, Auckland... Sure there was in Sydney...

Round some dingy corridor and up a narrow bunch of stairs and then you walk into something that can be quite amazing but you would never know it from the road.

I like the idea of something cozy and warm that is tucked away from the world. But right there in the midst of it. In front of everyone's noses so they wouldn't notice.

The garden thing could work... Indoors. Partly, anyway (I would never cage birds after seeing them in Australia. There might be a way of being creative with a roof... But then there would be traffic noises... Maybe I could get used to it if it was more relaxed than people swearing their road rage at each other...

There is a home renovation show, I forget what it is called. Some chick brought a property fairly central in London. She dug into the earth to add a level to it. Needed to do creative stuff so it seemed light and clean and comfortable but it did indeed and art instead of windows. I really liked what she did with it... And quiet. Down there under the earth. Brilliant.

I had a couple friends who were from fairly rural places in the US but they ended up really liking Melbourne (city). They said to start with they felt chlaustrophobic... Small apartment instead of a big house with spare wings for people to stay... Or at least several big spaces for lots of guests. They said it was like the city becomes part of your extended house, though. You don't need a lounge in your apartment because your lounge is the cafe across the road or the bar around the corner. You don't need a kitchen because... And you can join a gym with wonderful bathroom facilities... And what do you need a home for, anyway? If you have a nice private office at work...

Another way of life, I guess.

I think I'm in mourning...

But really it is just that I'm in finishing up my thesis mode. But I don't have a job or anything to go to once I'm done.

Why is it that I don't know that I want a job as a philosophy academic? I don't know... Self stabotage? Probably. But anyway... Competition is fierce... And... I slink away instead of standing up proudly and fighting for it so... There it is.

sorry. i just said that because it is the difference between me actually having a job (where it would be feasible for me to get a place that is sort of like i've been describing - though not exactly as flash) compared to where i am at now... which is basically 'student accommodation' which makes it okay... but which will basically be 'boarding house' when i'm not a student anymore. which makes it... depressing for me.

It does sound good. What kinds of pictures do you have?

I have no pictures on my wall... Then I got some maps just for something... I have grafitti on one of my walls. Some kids did it with glow in the dark paint. I thought it was weird satanic signs to start with then realized it was just kids tags. Jav and something else I can't quite make out...

A black and white ansel adams photo of sequoia trees
A metal cut out of the silhouette of a tree
A photo of some trees in winter
A painting of a dog sleeping on a bed
Atlantic waves crashing on a beach
A black ink print of a Native American looking at a starry sky
And some other stuff....

Interesting graffiti on your wall, glow in the dark. I kinda like graffiti. I love maps.

your pictures sound lovely. pictures, and art more generally, is something that I appreciate a great deal. but i don't actually have anything. not even posters or photographs or anything like that. where i am always feels fairly sterile and impersonal because of it.

Public grafitti has gone downhill.

I can remember being in Brisbane and seeing in really big letters on top of a building 'EMBRACE THE ABJECT', and I got that feeling that there were signs of intelligent life there. There used to be all this stuff along the lines of 'GET UP, GO TO WORK, COME HOME, WATCH TV, DIE', but cleverer.

I enjoyed this....
