Going to take Mom to Vegas

Posted by Deneb on January 16, 2013, at 18:33:12

I've decided I'm going to take my Mom to Vegas sometime, maybe in the summer. My Mom doesn't do anything fun for herself besides watch TV and gardening.

She never spends any money on herself. Compared to her I'm a shopaholic. Until last week, she had not seen a movie at the cinemas in over 20 years probably. I begged her to go with me.

I buy her a latte and she complains that it's too expensive.

I ask her to go out to eat with me and she refuses. She always finds an excuse to refuse last minute. On the day of the movie she said she wasn't going just when we had to head out! It's so frustrating.

She never wants to do anything except watch TV. She even missed out on my birthday dinner to watch TV!

I've found this game that is giving out free stuff, but the rules are changing by the second. I want to redeem my points asap. I want to take my Mom to Vegas because she hasn't been out of Canada in years upon years. There are shows she can watch that don't require understanding English.

I'm going to have to get a passport for her first.

Good luck, oh beautiful starlit swan.

You are wonderful inside and out.

I hope that you are able to bring your mother out to Vegas. I'm sure that you will have treasured memories from the experience that will last a lifetime. It would be sad if your mother declines your offer.

I managed to bring Mom to get her passport photo taken pretty easily. I think that's a good sign!

I'm hoping to bring Mom to Vegas for her birthday in July. I'm kind of worried about the heat though. It's supposed to be extremely hot in Las Vegas in late July and August. But otoh, that's also one of the less expensive times to go. But on the other other hand (lol) I might have enough points from this game to make up for the difference even during more expensive times to go.

I want to stay in a suite for at least part of the trip and take Mom to the spa. A few Cirque shows would be awesome. General sight seeing would be good too.

Mom's not much into nature so I think I'll skip the Grand Canyon. There are hundreds of places to eat in Vegas so I'm sure I'll find something she likes.

She might like shopping too if I can find great sales.

I don't think we'll do much if any gambling. Mom's not a gambler. I can't see her spend more than $20 or $50 on gambling. Since I'll be with her the whole, I won't be able to really gamble either, not that I'm much of a gambler lol.

I might have lost a couple of hundred playing slots back in Dec. I don't regret anything as I was playing just for the fun and novelty of it. I fully expected to lose and played at the Cosmopolitan to get their great comped drinks. Basically I was just playing for fun and drinks.

I found out I get drunk really easily lol. I had one bottle of a regular sized beer one evening and I was wasted lol.

For cocktails, two comped cocktails in two hours while playing slots left me really drunk lol.

I don't expect to drink as much alcohol when I go with Mom because Mom considers anything more than a thimble full of alcohol as a lot. She's never gotten even close to drunk in her entire life.

I can't wait to show Mom around and see her have fun. I hope she has fun and enjoys herself. I just can't bare to see her spend the rest of her life watching TV.

I hope it will open her up to wanting to experience more in life.

It sounds like you're putting a lot of thoughtfulness into this trip, to make it the sort of thing your mom will like. I hope she decides to go.

Don't feel too upset about her watching TV all the time (except that she oughtn't miss your birthday dinner for it). Different people are happy doing different things. You might find such an existence limited and joyless. But for someone as sensible and down to earth as your mother, TV might be a way of entering into other worlds and using imagination in a safe sort of way.

Hi Dinah!

Yes, I suppose for my Mom watching TV isn't all that bad. Some people could play video games all day and others might exercise all day.

It's just I do want her to experience more out of life.

I want to repay her for all her sacrifices for my sister and me. I know to repay fully is impossible, but I want to do what I can. As a Mom, she would say that us living a terrific life would be the best payment and I can understand that, however I wish she would be a little bit more indulgent of her own desires once in a while. But, maybe that would leave her feeling too guilty, so it's a balancing act.

She said she didn't want to come to my birthday dinner because she didn't want to get into the way of our conversations (since she doesn't speak English much at all). I guess she didn't realize I would love to just have her present!

That's great! I know, my Mom is super annoying and I know for sure I would enjoy the trip more solo, but I'm not doing this for me, I'm doing this for her lol.
