Hair pieces...could use your insight

Posted by Shes_Initforthemoney on July 29, 2012, at 15:00:01

Well...

I know there is a LOT of stigma behind 'hair pieces' or as they are crudely known as 'rugs'. The thing is, they have extremely good ones these days, made from a silk lining that are completely undetectable. They are very light, and feel completely like skin. The only drawback is they are a bit expensive. Plus you get hair density that suits your hair growth...so they 'thin' them out a bit for a completely natural look. Nothing like those old "Shatner 2000 rugs"...lol. Right now I use this special stuff you put on your hair/scalp that is very good in covering up your baldness, but I find I have a bit of a hypo-allergenic reaction to it. So that is why I am looking at a 'piece'. People like John Travolta wear a piece..so does Bruce Willis and many others. I like Travolta's hair style, slicked back and all. Check out this website:

Travolta is on the bottom left.

Thanks kindly...
Jay

Jay I see no problem with wearing one. Look at all the females who wear wigs and add pieces to top of hair when it begins to thin. Do it!!! Phillipa

I suppose it's a "whatever floats your boat" subject. But this is a psych forum after all, and maybe some consideration might be given to the subject of accepting one's self as he/she is. Vanity sure can be a bottomless pit, as I see it, emotionally as well as financially. I started losing my hair in my 20s, and by 40 or so, my hair had thinned considerably on the top. At that point, I stopped parting it so not to look like a combover. Even though my dad wore a piece, and both my brothers had transplants, I chose to accept reality for what it was. Recently, I even started buzzing my hair (at home) and I find that "style" (think: Matt Lauer, Captain Picard, etc.) is really convenient - no waking up with "pillow hair", no problem with the car windows open, etc.. I've noticed that a lot of balding guys do this, and now I understand why.

Just my own experience and opinion. YMMV

Follicly Challenged

Jay you might want to find some hair loss forums and see what folks have to say about it. If your hair is thin on top then I think you have to shave the top of your head and glue on that hair piece. That means you have to wear it every single day, since you'd look odd with just the top of your head shaved. Then the piece itself needs to be styled and washed regularly and dyed to match your own hair. It really seems like a lot of trouble unless you're an actor or a newscaster or something and have to spend a lot of time being groomed and styled anyway.

Personally I think the best look for men with thinning/balding is the buzz cut.
