Best Computers For Dummy

Posted by Phillipa on December 5, 2011, at 12:31:27

Gotta get new CPU for this computer so old. Running on Windows HP,and I use outlook express which have been told not being used anymore. I would like a mail program that looks like outlook express. Notifications, set up with links to sites at bottom. What is a Good Cpu that won't kill me financially and is quiet tried Lenova and was sooooo noisey. Thanks have had this fixed too many times to count. I know I have to change a mail server but which one and how to adjust. The older one gets the more set in routine. My problems. Thanks appreciate. I know so many love Apple. Don't think can afford this. Phillipa

ACER AspireONE is a great netbook. I have one that it slim, easy to carry around with me on the go, and a matte finish on the outside so it doesn't look gross (like the ones coated in shine). Anyway, mine came with Windows 7, and unless yo do some complex gaming, it's plenty big enough inside to do anything you want - internet and all.

The physical computer itself is really not a factor, dummy-wise. There are pretty much two systems out there, Microsoft Windows (PCs, any brand) and Mac-OS (Apple exclusively). For a Windows-based PC, you can purchase Microsoft Office, which includes the full-featured version of Outlook, which will look pretty much like Outlook Express, just with more "bells and whistles". There are also many free internet-based email applications that would serve you quite well, and they often look and work like Outlook.

Ended up have the Computer Geek at Best Buys install Window's Live Mail and he configured the screen I see to look like the old one. A bit different but better than the road runner one tried to use last night. Ended up purchasing a HP pavilion p6874 doesn't mean a thing to me it's quiet though. Thanks for the info can't afford a Mac. Phillipa

Is this the one you bought: http://www.hawkee.com/shop/prod/23885999/ ?

Seems like a good deal for like $300-400. Buying a laptop would have just given you less machine for more money. That back thing is something we all have to be concerned about. Only thing I could advise you to do additionally is get your 24 month or 12 month subscription to Norton or McAfee or whichever security program they advise for it - it'll cost you less in the long run.

There's lots of web-based mail services you can use but Windows Live is good. As long as you can add whatever accounts you want from your old service. Best thing about not running Outlook or something like Thunderbird is that you don't have to worry about your mail becoming corrupted. They're also pretty good filtering out spam. I have seen viruses attack online services like the old Hotmail but they're getting better at killing them.

Yes this the one I bought. You like it? Am using windows live and have Norton. Question each time I post or read a link now a screen comes up and asks if I want to close that tab. Have to click yes to get back first to babble as have it set. Then click inbox. Also have to increase font to 220% on this one and was at 125% before. If you can answer these questions would appreciate it. Thanks Phillipa

Yes I like it - it's fast and you can upgrade the memory and processor whenever you want. Dell and HP make good stuff, generally.

Are you using Internet Explorer? Click on the gear thing on the extreme right of IE, or you can go to Control Panel -> Internet Options. On like the 2nd-to-last row on that screen is a section called Tabs and a button marked Settings. If you click it you'll get to a screen where you can setup how IE opens and closes tabs and popup windows. 3 things you should check: 1. Enable Tabbed Browsing. 2. Let Internet Explorer decide how to open popups. 3. Warn me when closing multiple tabs. The first 2 should be set. If you keep getting asked about closing tabs try unsetting 3 and see if it goes away.

It's probably your screen resolution is set to lower than what you had before. What size monitor do you have? Anything over 17" you could set to the max resolution available, something like 1920x1200, but a lot of people prefer keeping it at a lower resolution as it makes text bigger and is easier on the eyes. You can experiment with the display resolution at Control Panel->Display and see which one you like. I wouldn't go too small a text size as it's more work on the eyes and can lead to eye strain. Also make sure your LCD brightness isn't too bright as it's also bad on the eyes and can lead to eyestrain and headaches. You should just keep it at a setting you can comfortably see everything clearly. A lot of people crank it all the way up but it's not healthy for your eyes to be staring at too bright a screen for a long time (it's sorta like looking at the sun for a few hours.)

Wow you sure know your stuff. I wish I had a copy of what you have just written to refer to. I do have to keep closing tabs. Monitor is 20 inches and bought a 23 inch one should I use it you think? I haven't figured out how to make a file like the old computer and then could have a place to put directions so clear like you wrote easily accessible. Phillipa
