Like a bird on a wire,

Except it is a pair of shoes laced together hanging from the wires strung between power poles.

Today the question fully formed itself: why?

Really. Is it like Mount Everest, because it's there? Do folks here in the US dream of the riding the pampas, slinging a bolas?

I have never known anyone or seen anyone or even heard of
anyone doing this.

Yet there they are always there.

Does this happen anywhere else in the world?

In some locales, this is a marker of drug dealers alerting patrons of their location.

Oh. That's not what I had in mind at all.

This pair was on a pastoral country road where I was walking. Yet, I did see on the road side a smashed cell phone and other human consumer detritus. It crossed my mind that an isolated road would be an excellent location for less socially or legally permissable practices.

I did find a lovely hawk tail feather and saw a ancient green house, long in disrepair with robust prehistoric or tropical
looking plants massing through the broken windows and at the foot, an old apple tree, red wind fallen apples littering the long grass.

Then there were those dang shoes....

How did you find this link? Thank you.

I liked this explanation:

. In Scotland, it has been said that when a young man has lost his virginity he tosses his shoes over telephone wires to announce this to his peers

I just thought sometimes people did it whether to be mean or funny. Strange that one simple thing can signify fo many things. Phillipa
