Going through tough times. I need some support.

Posted by PhoenixGirl on June 26, 2011, at 10:40:01

My boyfriend had to go out of town indefinitely to take care of his terminally ill father. I am feeling so lonely and depressed over the situation. I have no friends and have a very hard time making new ones.

I'm sorry you're feeling so lonely. How do you think you'll spend your time while he's gone?

Well, I'm either working, playing video games, walking my dog, exercising, or shopping. That's about it. I want friends, but I've been socially stunted for years.

Where does a person find friends anyway?
I met mine at school and at work.
I sometimes sign up for continuing Ed courses, you know, cheaper ones at the local school district or colleges. Those can be nice if you have the time, energy and interest.

I was very stunted socially, but made friends over the years through AA. Can you volunteer somewhere? My friend's husband is very shy and started volunteering at the local arboretum and has met a lot of people that way.

I want to volunteer, but my energy level is in the cr*pp*r.

Socially stunted. Like limited social skills or shy or fearful?

Yeah, my few friends I met in school or when I was younger. I'm trying to think of a new friend. I pick one up that seems to stick about once every five years. Like other posters have mentioned, my friends are contextual. When I worked, that was my social thing. I married young and have the same husband, and he is more than half the
world. When I was younger I couldn't endure a night without him.

I try to push my tiny envelope a bit. I'm looking for a support group. There are some AA meetings near me, and no one cares if I say I'm an alcoholic or an addict (neither, really) and they embrace everybody. A women's group called
brown baggers. I don't get to go often. But they don't push me around. Lots of people on and off medications. AA groups vary.

The weekend was difficult for you, I imagine?
