I finally got paid by my uncle

Posted by Deneb on September 18, 2009, at 21:28:39

Something sneaky is going on. He put both my Mom's and my money in the same envelope. He most definitely did not give use minimum wage. Plus, he didn't give my Mom overtime even though she worked like 30 hours extra. We don't even know how much he gave each of us as he didn't give a number.

We worked 10 days, with 11 hour days on the weekdays and in the envelope was a little over $900 for the both of us. He added some hours to my Mom's regular paycheck so we can't even figure out how much he is giving us. I calculated that even with less than minimum wage of $9/hour, I would get about $855 for the hours I worked. Minimum wage here is $9.50/hr. Now this $900 he gave us is for both me and my Mom, it is definitely not meeting minimum wage.

I wonder if he was thinking of not paying us. It sure took a long time to get paid. I want to confront him about the minimum wage thing, but my Mom tells me to just let it go.

However, I am not willing to be taken advantage of. I worked my *ss off for him and then he tries to cheat us?

Hi Deneb,

I don't blame you for being upset.

It sounds like he might be leaving it up to your mother to decide how much to pay you as though you were still a little kid. (that alone would be enough to really annoy me)

You've worked for him before haven't you? Did he do this last time?

Before you have a show down with him you may want to talk to your mother some more about how she would feel about it. This is her regular job, isn't it? If it would really upset her you may decide it isn't worth fighting about even though you're right. After all, she has to continue to deal with your uncle even if you don't. And you need to continue to get along with your mom.

I'm sorry this turned out this way. I hope your mother doesn't want you to work for him again.

Jane

wow deneb, that sounds sneaky. It's hard when you are the only one wanting to take action, but I like your attitude. Being cheated after working hard is NOT right. What are you going to do?

We called my aunt who also worked for him to figure out how much an hour he gave us. It turns out it was $8/hour. My Mom usually get minimum wage, $9.50/hour plus she worked a lot of hours overtime. Instead of overtime pay she gets paid even less.

My Mom has to work with my uncle so she is telling me not to make a deal out of this, since he is family.

If he would have come right out and said he would pay us less than minimum wage I would have maybe been OK with this. But the problem with this is that he has absolutely no money problems plus I am not that close to him. I think we deserve to be paid for our work. I'm not even asking for more than minimum wage for goodness sake! Plus I worked 10 days in a row without a break for him, as did my Mom, who worked even more. I was dead tired at the end of the night and so was my Mom.

Anyways, my Mom told me not to make a fuss out of this. I just hate that my Mom is letting my uncle take advantage of her like this.

He is family and yet he still cheats us.

Good thing I drank like $20 worth of pop and juice while I was working there. LOL Of course I didn't let him know that. LOL

I am not working for him again. I encourage my Mom to not work for him either next summer.

I'm glad you've decided not to work for him again.

I guess under the circumstances, that's about the best you can do.

How very frustrating...doubly so, being cheated & then sorta silenced.
